Theories

The Mask

There are a lot of theories about Kakashi's mask, one is that masks are a part of the Hatake family and every member wore one. This theory ha been proven false though because in Chapter 425, we see Kakashi's father, Sakumo, without a mask.

Another theory is one I just heard about from Lostoverlord on DeviantArt. She believes that the mask Kakashi wears is made of a chakra-asborbing/blocking cloth to seal his clan ability after his dad died. I like this theory and it might be true.

This is my theory, I believe that when Sakumo died the village still hated him, but since he was gone they took things out on Kakashi since he looked a lot like him. They also most likely compared him all the time to Sakumo, before and after his death. I believe that's the reason he started wearing his mask, to try and distance himself from his father. Kind of like saying "I am not my father, I will not end up like him." as to why he still wears one, I believe that's because Sakumo was on the same level of the Sennin, while Kakashi falls short of that (not saying he isn't holding back or anything, but he hasn't really done much in the big fights) so he doesn't want people to expect him to be another Sakumo. (which may also be why he never got the Hatake tanto fixed.) so the mask is still to distance himself from Sakumo. Also to show he is his own person. You remember how he reacted to the Iwa ninja mistaking him for the White Fang. So later on his mask says "I am not my father, I am my own person."

The Mangekyo Sharingan

As we all know, you need to kill you're best friend in order to get the Mangekyo Sharingan. Which makes you wonder how kakashi got it. One theory I heard was that Kakashi killed Rin, which I highly doubt.

There is also the survivor's guilt Kakashi might have had after Obito's death. Extreme guilt that over time made him believe he was responsible for his best friend's death.

Another theory is that Kakashi found another way, possibly through hard work.

When Kakashi's father killed himself, he might have asked Kakashi to be the kaishakunin to his seppuku ritual and that might have been enough to awaken the Mangekyo. Hey, Sasuke did when he killed Itachi, so family can fit too.

Still another theory, my theory, goes along with the ObiTobiMada theory. Madara, in Obito's body, kills Rin, since Obito was in love with her it might work along the lines of killing your best friend, and he got the Mangekyo Sharingan. Since Kakashi has Obito's other eye there still might be a connection, and, over time Kakashi was able to release that power. After all, Tobi and Kakashi's sharingan powers are both time-space jutsu and it seems every Mangekyo has a different power so I believe it makes sense.
